چکیده

* Corresponding author This study was partly carried out in the framework of the project “Using satellite images for automatic mapping of forest clear cuts and new plantations” (Project number 130), funded by Programa AGRO, Medida 8 – Desenvolvimento Tecnológico e Demonstração, Acção 8.1 – Desenvolvimento Experimental e Demonstração (DE&D) Abstract – The launch, in recent years, of several very high spatial resolution satellite (VHSRS) systems for civilian use has initiated a new era in Remote Sensing and Earth Observation, creating both new opportunities and challenges. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the use of VHSRS imagery, with a focus on thematic applications. Thematic applications constitute the majority of the work done with VHSRS images but there are also a substantial number of photogrammetric studies and others addressing imagery properties (such as positional accuracy) or algorithms for information extraction. Within thematic applications land resources predominate, covering essentially the fields of natural resources management, spatial planning, urban areas, forestry and agriculture. The potential applications of VHSRS images have not yet been fully explored and more studies are needed to investigate further some of the enhanced characteristics but also limitations of these images.

Object-Oriented Method for Automatic Extraction of Road from High Resolution Satellite Images

As the information carried in a high spatial resolution image is not represented by single pixels but by meaningful image objects, which include the association of multiple pixels and their mutual relations, the object based method has become one of the most commonly used strategies for the processing of high resolution imagery. This processing comprises two fundamental and critical steps towar...

Introducing Satellite Remote Sensing Systems and its Application in Archaeology Case Study: Behshahr Plain- Mazandaran

Human groups have considered the Behshahr plain of Mazandaran in the past Due to its particular geographical shape, location between the Caspian Sea and mountains, and the existence of some rivers in the region. However, our knowledge of this area is limited to several published surveys and archaeological investigation of its ancient sites. No detailed research has conducted on the formation of...

Comparing the Capability of Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 Satellite Imagery in Land Use and Land Cover Mapping Using Pixel-based and Object-based Classification Methods

Introduction: Having accurate and up-to-date information on the status of land use and land cover change is a key point to protecting natural resources, sustainable agriculture management and urban development. Preparing the land cover and land use maps with traditional methods is usually time and cost consuming. Nowadays satellite imagery provides the possibility to prepare these maps in less ...

Information fusion for rural land-use classification with high-resolution satellite imagery

We propose an information fusion method for the extraction of land-use information based on both the panchromatic and multispectral Indian Remote Sensing Satellite 1C (IRS-1C) satellite imagery. It integrates spectral, spatial and structural information existing in the image. A thematic map was first produced with a maximum-likelihood classification (MLC) applied to the multispectral imagery. P...
